UAM Case Study: AI Agents for a Multimodal Educational Experience

Learn how we helped the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Azcapotzalco (UAM-A) to evolve your educational platform using artificial intelligence on AWS. With EducaIA, the university went from a text-based assistant to a multimodal platform with 5 specialized AI agents, capable of personalizing the learning experience and supporting teachers in the generation of educational content.

UAM transformed its educational platform through a solution developed on Amazon Web Services, incorporating intelligent agents to offer more personalized and multimodal learning experiences.

With it, students can receive content adapted to their learning style, while teachers have new capabilities to generate educational materials. The platform also incorporated an analytics layer that provides visibility into student usage, engagement, and learning preferences.

THE CHALLENGE

In its first phase, UAM Azcapotzalco had an educational assistant based on Amazon Lex that only supported text interactions. This limited the personalization of the experience and caused all students to receive similar responses, regardless of their way of learning.

In addition, professors continued to manually create exams, syllabus, and activities, while the university did not have analytics tools to learn about engagement patterns or learning preferences.

Based on this, the main needs that were detected were:

-Personalize the experience according to different learning styles.

- Incorporate content in formats such as image, audio and video.

- Facilitate the generation of educational materials for teachers.

- Improve the user experience on mid-range and low-end devices.

- Optimize platform performance and stability.

- Gain greater visibility into student behavior and engagement.

WHAT DID WE DO?

We designed and developed EducaIA Phase 2, a multimodal educational platform based on specialized AI agents and deployed on a 100% serverless architecture on AWS.

The solution uses the Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Runtime to run and orchestrate 5 specialized agents: one for students, one for teachers, and three media agents for image, audio, and video generation.

Our proposal included:

- Development of 5 specialized AI agents for students, teachers and multimedia generation.

- Personalization of the experience according to the VARK learning model: visual, auditory, reading/writing and kinesthetic.

- Generation of educational content in text, image, voice and video.

- Creation of materials for teachers, such as exams, syllabus, and activities.

- Implementation of a knowledge base with official UAM academic content.

- Development of dashboards to analyze engagement, learning styles and content quality.

- Optimization of the web experience for mid-range and low-end devices.

- Implementation of a serverless architecture on AWS ready to scale according to usage.

With this implementation, UAM evolved from a text-only educational assistant to a multimodal platform powered by intelligent agents and artificial intelligence.

RESULTS

The implementation of EducaIA Phase 2 allowed concrete results to be obtained during the project:

- 64 registered profiles, corresponding to approximately 100 students and 12 teachers.

- 72% activation rate among registered users.

- 13 educational content generated by teachers: 7 exams, 3 syllabus, 2 activities and 1 final project.

- 2 analytics dashboards with information that was not available in the previous phase.

- Generation of educational content in text, image and voice.

- Personalization of answers according to the learning style of each student.

- Web experience accessible from mid-range and low-end devices.

- Costs that scale with actual usage, with minimal charges during periods of non-academic activity.

Thanks to this collaboration, UAM incorporated AI agents within its educational platform and expanded the capabilities of EducaIA beyond a traditional assistant.

The combination of agent AI, multimodal content, and Amazon Web Services services created a more personalized experience for students, new tools for teachers, and analytics capabilities that were previously unavailable.
