CUSTOM COMPUTE PROCESSORS
On Nov. 30, Amazon.com Inc’s cloud computing unit unveiled two new custom computing chips, aimed at helping its customers beat the cost of using products from Intel Corp and Nvidia Corp.
The company launched the third generation of Graviton, a chip designed to compete with Intel’s core processor and Advanced Micro Devices. The Graviton3 is 25% faster compared to its predecessor. “We expect it to provide better return per dollar than Intel’s chips,” Dave Brown told Reuters.
Brown, vice president of Elastic Compute Cloud at Amazon, also commented that the company wants to keep the computing market competitive by offering an additional chip option.
A new class of processor called Trainium, designed to train machine-learning computer models and which will compete with Nvidia’s chips, will soon be available to its customers.
INNOVATIVE COLLABORATIONS
AWS still works closely with Intel, AMD, and Nvidia. With the latter, it works on its Graviton processors with the aim of providing a way for Android game developers to transmit their titles to devices.
With $45.37 billion in sales during 2020, Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the world’s largest cloud computing provider and one of the largest buyers of data center chips whose computing power it leases to its customers.
