VIU identified the need to create a modern, flexible, and secure learning environment that would allow students and faculty to access academic tools from anywhere, at any time. The goal was to provide an intuitive digital platform for sharing information, collaborating on projects, and facilitating remote teaching with high-level user experiences.
One of the main challenges was to offer virtual labs equipped with specialized software, tailored to the requirements of each academic program—from graphic design to engineering—without incurring high physical infrastructure costs or compromising scalability or security. In addition, it was necessary to centrally and automatically manage software updates, licensing and access control, ensuring a seamless experience for more than 10,000 students per school year.
Itera designed and implemented a cloud solution based on Amazon AppStream 2.0 and Amazon WorkSpaces, enabling the secure and scalable delivery of virtual desktops and specialized applications on demand. By integrating with custom authentication flows, students can access their environments with a single click, from any device, and without the need for on-premises installations. With AppStream 2.0, students can run resource-intensive applications directly from the browser, with high performance, low latency, and without compromising the user experience. In addition, the pay-per-session model optimises costs, ensuring an excellent cost-benefit ratio for both the university and the students. The solution is complemented by a 24/7 managed support service, which ensures continuous and uninterrupted operation.
The implementation of Amazon AppStream 2.0 and WorkSpaces has been key in the university’s technology strategy, allowing it to position itself as an internationally recognized institution for its focus on high-performance digital education. With provisioning times reduced to minutes and an optimized user experience, more than 10,000 students per cycle access learning tools without physical or technical barriers. The solution proposed by Itera allowed the University not only to reduce operational and administrative costs, but also to significantly improve the flexibility, availability and scalability of its educational technological infrastructure, aligning with the current demands of remote and hybrid learning.
